The Big C

Today is the day
That Christ was born
Its hard to believe
God as a newborn
Shout of His love
from a bull horn

Two days to Christmas
kids have come and gone
At least for tonight
and for some hours past dawn
All through with the shopping
unless we find a last coupon
Seven went by fast
Six flew right by
Five I don't remember
Four a bit awry
Three was fun at a play
pleasing to the eye.

No one is reading this
so it doesn't really matter
Eight days, Seven
Six. Why the chatter?
Guess I just like
to continue the patter.

Down in single digits
Excitement growing strong
Shopping trips planned
diving into the throng
Got to mail the presents
to get to where they belong.

Ten Days, Ten Day
run to the store right away
Only Ten Days Left
no time for layaway
Ten Days left
nothing more to say

Eleven days
and the panic begins
Presents for family
Cards for friends
Candies and pies
How to stay thin?

Twelve days till Christmas
Time to sing that song
With maids and dancing
and doves that belong
If I started singing that song
I'm sure I would hear a gong.

Holiday Carols

I just read a blog of a good friend of mine which supported the use of "Holiday Concert" instead of "Christmas Concert" as the title for a High School band event that just occurred. While his reasoning was sound, I'm wondering about it a bit.

If the concert contained music from the Jewish winter holidays, Muslim winter holidays, and Christian winter holidays, then by all means call it a "Holiday Concert." But if contained Christmas carols, then it should be a "Christmas Concert."

Just my thoughts.

Fifteen Days
all shops are open
Fifteen Days
all kids are hopin'
Fifteen Days
Bill payers are mopin'
----------
Only fourteen days left
to get ready for the day
To finish all the shopping
and all the games we play
To put up all the bangles
that could stay up til May
----
Thirteen
what a lucky number
Thirteen
break out of your slumber
If I don't get big presents
bummer

Sixteen days
and still no cake
Scott and I are worried
No cakes will she bake
Maybe an Apple Pie
We'll get her to make

Seventeen days
and the snow has finally fallen
Cold winter wind
Can Santa be stallin'?
Loud shouts of joy
will soon be calling.

Eighteen days will go by fast
Eighteen days will never last.

Cold winds blow but shop we must
Until our credit receeds to dust.
Buy more toys for all our kids
Check our latest eBay bids.
Spirit comes after self has been let go.

Nineteen days to go
No lights for us just yet
Time to review the list
for family and our pet
Christmas specials on the tube
and more ads, you can bet
Still time to order
on the net
Still time to ship
without much debt
Not time to
break into a sweat
Just yet.
But the sweating time is coming.

Twenty days to Christmas
The Cold has finally come
A flake or two of snow
The nose a little numb

Ads come in droves
Telling us what to buy
From toys and games and such
to coats to keep us dry

Twenty days of hope
for more than just soap.
Twenty days
still a bit too long.

Lites in the Sky

Christmas lights are up in quite a few houses in our neighborhood, along with inside trees all decorated. This seems a bit early, but maybe they don't leave them up through January as we do. One year, the tree was still up in March until our high school daughter finally got sick of it and starting taking it down.

First snow in St. Louis this morning. 25 or 30 flakes at least. Enough for Santa.
